Folk around the world

If you had to associate folk music to a country I’m pretty sure you would pick USA, but a lot of talented musician from other countries grew up with the melodies of Dylan, Young, Cash… Guess what? Now they want to play this music too. So Folk around the World is a recurring feature to make you travel while listening to some amazing artists.

First stop of the year: Israel

Asaf Avidan is was the front man of the Israeli rock band “Asaf Avidan & the Mojos”. They released three albums together and he is about to released a solo album called “Different Pulses”. After the break with his band Asaf toured with only his guitar and harmonica. People enjoyed so much those intimate shows that Asaf decided to rent a small room and record some songs. The result is amazing. This video is one of the 19 you can watch/listen/buy at thebox.asafavidanmusic.com

Since we all love to dance here and Asaf got his major international breakthrough with a remix, here the Reckokning song remix. Press play, dance and enjoy (but don’t forget the true talent of Asaf)

Enjoy,

Third Stop: Belgium

Elke De Mey is a young musician from Belgium, playing some great dark intimistic folk. On her website you can read that “For a while she has been playing as Love Like Birds for anyone who cares to listen, and with a fast growing number of fans it became time for a self-titled EP.” How could you not care to listen such beautiful melodies.

Second stop: Denmark

Agnes Obel is a Danish songwriter currently living in Berlin. She started playing the piano really young and became a great musician influenced by Chopin, Joni Mitchell, PJ Harvey… Her music is pure, with very few instruments and very atmospheric. If she is playing close to your house you really need to go see her. You won’t regret it. Everything around you will become insignificant. It will be just Agnes, her piano and her beautiful voice.

Enjoy,

First stop: France

Let me introduce you to Theodore, Paul & Gabriel.

Yes those three beautiful ladies took boy’s names as their stage names. This is their first album but it’s already excellent. Beautiful voices/choirs/melodies/guitars… What more can you ask?

I’m going to add this video too, the sound is not great but the song is … well mystical.

Enjoy,
